They make it possible to have discussions about things that relate to the topic of the group without having to read through abuse, spam, or job ads (which are spam too, really). My experience has been that articles are rejected very rarely by moderators, and I think concerns about censorship or some such are not an issue in practice. I'm all for a group where I don't have to delete another ten job ads whenever I go to read it. And I don't find it all that enlightening to read articles where people throw the worst kind of abuse at each other... I certainly will be voting yes for a moderated group.
