I'm not so certain it's a MS-ism. I know the topic was discussed in
the early 80's, and I doubt that there was any MS products anywhere
near. Possibly it was a DEC-ism in those days.

Anyhow, the concept has been adopted by Cygwin (eCos) and some
real-time linux projects.
