In Ada 83, I often did something like

Buffer_C : constant String := Some_Function;
Buffer : String (1 .. Buffer_C'Length) := Buffer_C;

so I could modify Buffer, and hoped that the compiler would be smart 
enough to only keep one copy of the string.
