   On one hard real time project, I went from 23 minutes to 9.7
milliseconds over six months of improving the algorithms.  On another
system, the initial tests showed that speed had to be improved by a
factor of sixty.  It was, but by system redesign, not by bit-fiddling
improvements.  A twenty-five percent improvement is in the noise.  It
may be necessary noise if you are at 110% of budget, but get the logs
out of your eye first.
