My company, even though most of its work is government contracts, takes the same approach with some proprietary projects. But, I wonder if we could get companies to provide this information on an anonymous basis. We'd have to ask them to mail to one "trusted" place (which could even strip identifiers automatically) with a count of the number of projects of each type and/or size (or something like that).
