Let me say this: I don't believe that money is the sole motivator for anything. I don't even believe that it is the strongest motivator for anything. Money is a *complex* motivator and it certainly isn't the first and last word behind every single software development effort anywhere in the world. My position is, ande always has been, that monetary reward encourages the development of software. People do it because they get paid a salary. People do it because they think they might make a buck on it down the road. People do it for a lot of other reasons too, but most companies have a hard time hiring programmers with a promise of personal fulfillment in leu of a paycheck. I don't see why that seems to be such a controversial statement?
