Imagine yourself writing an email reader.  You give the incoming
email the ability to do various things (some with user permission only)
such as display on the screen, be saved to disk, etc.

Now imagine yourself giving the incoming email the ability to:

[1] Send emails without telling the user or asking permission,

[2] Read your address book so as to know who to send to.

Now imagine the media jumping on the 13 year old moron who
decided to eploit your little "feature", and never questioning
your part in all of this.

...Pretty sweet deal Microsoft has, eh?
