I can't imagine a simpler concept than the one behind flex, and even reading the entire manual with all the gory details is pretty easy, it is not that long. Even if you want to write lexical analyzers by hand (a decision I certainly find reasonable in some cases), it is worth making the very minimal effort to understand how tools like flex are used.
