I must say I find the attitude that streams are not quite what you want because the representations are not well defined to be a bit peculiar. The language has NEVER been in the business of defining default representations. If you want a particular representation, you need to say so. Note that for people who *really* *do* want a completely well defined target-independent stream representation standard, the XDR package in GLADE provides exactly this for Ada 95 streams.
