Any competent programmer should be able to acquire the *syntax* of another programming language almost immediately. Ironically, this particular point is one where Ada and C are identical, and if you used "x" instead of 'x' in C you would get equally mysterious (actually probably more mysterious messages, something like: warning: comparison between pointer and integer (at least that's what gcc gives for the equivalent C mistake: if ("a" <= q && q <= "z") ...
