When some Cygnus customer donates code to the GCC project, it almost always requires a considerable amount of work to merge it with the current GCC tree. This means that the GCC versions used by customers probably differ a lot from the public version, and I think this is a hint that a lot of work is done which never finds its way into the public GCC tree.
