I guess for most shops, OS choice depends on available talent (unless you're stuck with one of the obvious dead ends). I think the main question regarding BSD's future is if it's inherently necessary to keep up with the competitors' rate of change (a rate that isn't necessarily a good thing in itself). It could be that some real kernel/low-level innovation is on the horizon affecting legacy systems, but I doubt it; I don't buy into that multi-core mantra. Beyond that, you only need a rather smallish pool of developers who write drivers for new hardware, or maintain existing to deal with new quirks.
