For all its faults, there is no alternative to BSD sockets. All systems supporting TCP and UDP use those concepts, even if they are very far away from the original UNIX concepts in other aspects. Even the XTI interface was retrofitted to match the BSD sockets concepts, even though the TLI interfaces suggested a closer correspondence to the TCP state in the network.
