I don't think portability is a major concern for open source projects. If it runs on GNU/Linux (i386 and maybe amd64), it's usually good enough. It's generally very hard to tell what makes a project successful. I used to think that the cathedral-like development style favored by AdaCore was part of the problem, but there still are some similarly structured projects which have got quite a following.
