I agree.. in fact, it was my observation (back when I had to 
manage [shudder] projects) that it was not appropriate to 
"trust" a programmer with a C compiler, if that programmer
could not be "trusted" with an ASSEMBLER.

...... ergo, C is the assembly language of choice.
