This is not true, simply use

\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

at the preamble and you're ready to go Unicode.

There are also great tools for generating vector graphics (take a look
at the Tikz/PGF pacakage).

As pointed out, no. OTOH, going this way would potentially result in
much faster software, but in may cases this is not so relevant.
