In practice this will work fine, but unfortunately lawyers for certain large companies are unlikely to be happy at this kind of informal protection of their trade secrets. Remember that you protect trade secrets for two reasons. 1. To keep things secret 2. To be seen to be taking due diligence in keeping things secret, so that legally the trade secrets retain their status as secrets.
