Have you read the TeXBook? It is even fun to read! And it is impressive to notice that Knuth had foreseen and gracefully handled such encoding issues long before they become a mainstream problem in computation. This reminds me a quotation from Schopenhauer: "Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see." Also, the whole language is beautifully designed. Anyone should, if not read, at least know of the classical books in his/her area and the TeXbook is surely a major achievement in the field of computation, the work of a true genius. Elias. P.S.: Sorry if I've gone off-topic here, but could not resist.
