Java is _by_design_ a programming language intended to be safer than C. Two years ago Sun's Chief Technology Officer spoke at the RSA Conference and pointed out that the bytecode engine and web stuff was not the original reason Sun was interested in Java. The write-once, debug-everywhere approach stems only from that latter use of Java, having not much to do with native compiled Java.
