Our view is that the LGPL is too restrictive, so we use a much less restrictive license. But the real point is, as I said in my last message, you cannot avoid legal issues when using someone else's copyrighted software. You are quite right that merely because something is "free" does not mean you can use it. You must read and study the license agreement, just as you would if you were using Microsoft software. For example, cygwin is "free", but the generally available version is distributed under the GPL. This means that it cannot be used in proprietary software (if you want to use cygwin in proprietary software, you must use the proprietary version also available from Cygnus). However, it is equally absurd to decide that because something is "free", you cannot use it in proprietary software.
