Ada/Ed is an interpreter, with a run-time performance comparable to that of BASIC. It is a full implementation of Ada, not a subset. It requires a hard disk but no other special hardware, and will run successfully on any IBM-PC, PC-XT, PC-AT, or generic clone. The capacity is nevertheless limited by the amount of memory avialable, and the system is not usable with less than 640K of memory. On the PC-AT, the use of Digital Research Concurrent (TM) DOS 286 makes it possible to use 4MB of memory, and obtain a performance which is 50% of that of Ada/Ed-C on the SUN-2 workstation. On a regular PC, programs of a few hundred lines (depending on the type and structure of the program) can be compiled and run. Ada/Ed-C for the IBM-PC is primarily intended for instructional use, and is being distributed by New York University at a cost of $95. In addition Ada/Ed-C is currently available on VAX running UNIX BSD 4.2, VAX running VMS 4.3, on SUN workstations, and on the ELXSI 6400 running ENIX. These four versions have been validated under the ACVC 1.7 test suite.
