I give a lecture at the start on why it is valuable to learn low level stuff like this, and one of the anologies I use is that even though few of us will be auto-mechanics, it is helpful in driving a car to understand the basic principles of how it works. This helps you trouble shoot in some situations, and also adds a safety margin, since you better understand the technical limitations of a car!
