The series examines the methods of software process improvement that were developed at the Software Engineering Institute: the Capability Maturity Model for software; the Personal Software Process; and the Team Software Process. Part I covers Process Maturity by examining why software projects fail, the SEI process improvement approach, and building the CMM model. The SIM study recommends that IS and Y2K project managers work together closely in order to develop a shared vision for Y2K compliancy. The study also offers the following tips: *Assign a project manager that knows the organization thoroughly *Do a thorough job of up-front analysis and planning *Centralize project management activities *Be aware of IS practices and the possible increased cost with poor practices *Use multiple methods for preliminary Y2K cost estimates *Investigate hardware needs early and explore alternatives to control cost *Acquire human resources early. Both automatic systems and systems that support and cooperate with people are within the scope of the conference, as are computational models of human software engineering activities. ASE-98 encourages contributions describing basic research, novel applications, and experience reports.
