As such, we think it is only fair to let other authors know that there is still time to get material in to us for consideration. Anything that is in our hands by 1 December is going to be evaluated. So if you hesitated before ... now is the time to jump in! Please send us a heads up with your intentions, with your paper to follow by the end of this month. We will be delighted to hear from you. James M. Purtilo General Chair International Conference on Configurable Distributed Systems CALL FOR PAPERS FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CONFIGURABLE DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS May 4-6, 1998 Annapolis, Maryland, USA Sponsored by the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies ICCDS emphasizes both innovative research and quantified experience in configurable distributed and parallel systems. The aim is to explore on-line system configuration at levels of abstraction ranging from operating system kernels and communication protocols, to operating-system services, to application-level program functionality. We seek applications that require on-line configuration in the distributed and parallel domains, with configuration addressing the applications' performance, dependability, and non-disruptive evolution requirements. We are interested in the mechanisms required for capture of program state based on which configuration decisions are made, as well as the mechanisms with which configuration changes are carried out. We seek innovative research on practical algorithms able to make on-line configuration decisions, as well as research addressing the opportunities for and limitations of on-line software configuration. We also encourage prospective authors to consider the specification, design, management and maintenance aspects of configurable distributed systems and software. This ICCDS is the fourth in a series of workshops and conferences addressing issues in configurable distributed systems. Topics of interest include: Operating system, tool and language support for system configuration Instrumentation and visualization of configurable systems Configuration and reconfiguration methods and algorithms Configuration and reconfiguration management Compiler-assisted reconfiguration techniques Reconfiguration in the presence of component failures Reconfiguration for long-term on-line software evolution Reconfiguration using active networking techniques Reconfiguration in novel application areas, including mobile computing, real-time systems, mobile code, and electronic commerce. Techniques for managing very large scale configurations Specification and modelling of reconfigurable systems Papers focusing on dynamic solutions are especially welcome. We also invite submission of case studies documenting substantial experience that can contribute to the understanding of configurable systems. These papers should be identified as such by the author, and will be reviewed based upon their potential for helping communicate `lessons learned.' Proposals for panels addressing timely topics of interest to the community are also invited. Papers will be published in a proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society, and will also be made available on the Web. In addition, as in past years, we expect the best papers from the conference based on feedback from participants to be selected to appear in a special issue of a suitable journal. INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS: Five copies of the complete paper should be submitted to either of the two program chairs. Papers must be written in English, and should be no more than twenty pages (double spaced) in length, including figures. Electronic submission of Postscript by email is encouraged. For additional information, contact either Robert Cole (rhc@hplb.hpl.hp.com) or Rick Schlichting (rick@cs.arizona.edu).
