Legacy bystems are both assets and impediments in the transformation process. Hence, the workshop will address questions about utilizing legacy systems for designing their object-oriented replacements and understanding the interoperability between object-oriented and legacy systems. A summary of the workshop discussion will be made available to all the participants and the object community soon after the workshop. It will also be published in the Addendum to OOPSLA Proceedings. Goals: The wokshop will pool the experience and expertise of application developers, specialist consultants, redevelopment tool developers and object technology researchers for: - Clearer understanding of migration path from legacy to object-oriented applications - Improved design of object-oriented applications - Better integration of legacy and object-oriented applications - Enhanced tool-support for various parts of the transformation process Focus: We will focus on the utilization of legacy systems in transformation, interoperability with object-oriented systems, processes, techniques and design patterns for efficient transformation and tools for automating transformation. These topics will be addressed in the workshop through presentations followed by panel discussions. There will be substantial opprtunity for informal discussions throughout the workshop. The panels will focus on four key areas of legacy transformation: - Experience with transformation of large software systems Programming language: moving from procedural to object-oriented languages Data: moving data from file-based/hierarchical/relational to OO databases Architecture: moving from mainframe-based to distributed architectures; utilizing ORBs and web-based architectures Specific transformation project experience - Techniques and tools for assessment, analysis, modelling and transformation Sizing and partitioning tools Application understanding tools and approaches Impact assessment and bridging techniques Test automation/selection tools Design patterns for transformation - Principles and theory Formal analysis and requirement specification Verification Pattern recognition - syntactic and semantic aspects Theory of specialization and generalization - Processes, methods and overall management of transformation Transformation planning and balancing mission critical needs Integration of methodologies and tools for a complete transformation environment Quality assurance: verification and validation Requirements for Attendance: We seek position papers of 2-4 pages describing research and experience in one or more of the key areas outlined above or a closely related area. Papers are due by August 5 and selected participants will be notified by August 20. Electronic submissions in text form are strongly encouraged. Please also send a paper copy for non-text submissions (e.g PostScript). Please check the URL for updates about the workshop.
