The project, which is funded in part by the Ada Joint Program Office's ATIP-P (Ada Technology Insertion Program Partnership), is extending Tenon's UNIX system for Apple computers to include the GNAT-Ada 95 tool suite. This ATIP-P effort is one of ten competitive awards to different vendors to stimulate utilization of the Ada 95 language by bringing to market a variety of products that support the Ada language. Because the GNAT Ada front-end will be released to the General Public License (GPL), free availability of the system and its source code will be ensured. This will provide a low-cost Ada development environment for academic and government markets. Tenon's MachTen UNIX/Mach software for Macintosh and Power Macintosh supports a complete GNU software development environment. The GNAT-MAC team brought Ada 95 to the entire range of Macintosh platforms by leveraging Tenon's existing gcc development tool suite. Preliminary versions of GNAT-MAC are available now on the Internet (http://gnat- mac.com/macada). Those within the Ada community may recall the development of a large Ada-based Submarine Combat System (SCS), the AN/BSY-2 and a subset, the AN/BQG-5, by Lockheed Martin (then Martin Marietta) Ocean, Radar and Sensor Systems. Together, the AN/BSY-2 and the AN/BQG-5 comprise more than 4 million lines of unique Ada code that were used in the Seawolf submarine. The AN/BSY-2 development program is proof of Ada's capabilities in large, extensive, embedded systems. The AN/BSY-2 SCS is said to be the most advanced system of its type in the world, the "brains" of the Seawolf submarine. According to the article, the Ada technology used on the Seawolf has proven to be a true success, "The combination of the speed and the stealth and the weapon-carrying capacity of this ship really makes it the most powerful warship in the world: not just the most powerful submarine," said Adm. Bruce DeMArs, director of naval nuclear propulsion, in describing the initial trials.
