Karl's recent note to the contrary, Holden's other liabilities are not balanced by the slapstick humor. The way you ignore Holden depends on the way you currently receive his "messages." Unfortunately, there are a large number of possibilities given the various operating systems, mail handlers, bulletin board systems, and news handlers. For example, I could be subjected to them as direct mail from Info-Ada on my UNIX system with MH, as entries on the MITRE Ada bulletin board, and as news items on comp.lang.ada through the rn newsreader. I will be describing how to flush him from each of these three paths. Other sources, such as Bitnet mail or VMS mailers, are beyond my knowledge. Maybe someone who does know such systems will contribute the necessary techniques. FLUSHING HOLDEN FROM UNIX/MH DIRECT MAIL 1. Create in your login directory a file named .forward (note the leading period) containing exactly the following, quotes included, but with your userid substituted for mine: "| /usr/local/slocal -user munck" Depending on local conditions, you may need to use "/usr/lib/mh/slocal" or "/usr/local/lib/mh/slocal" instead of "/usr/local/slocal". Type "which slocal" to determine which to use, or ask your local UNIX guru. 2. Also in your login directory, create a file named .maildelivery with the following three lines: >From "grebyn!ted" destroy A - >From "ted@grebyn.com" destroy A - >From "Ted Holden" destroy A - The "A -" at the end of each line is necessary but not worth explaining. If messages from Holden arrive with values other than these in the From header, add lines specifying them to .maildelivery. For further information, see the manual page for mhook ("man mhook"). Of course, you could use "munck@mitre.org" and "Bob Munck" in the above to get rid of stuff from me. But why would you want to? -- Bob Munck
