GM, et alia, spend huge amounts of money building "concept cars" and doing market research to try to figure out what customers will want to buy. And not just their *existing* customers either. They go ask people who *don't* buy their product to figure out how to make something that will get them to hand over some cash too. "We build whatever our existing customer's ask for..." is a recepie for how to go out of business over time.
