I do it all the time (and in Ada). My engine controls have to react with very real, very hard deadlines and I'd better have a compiler that squeezes out ever last instruction it possibly can. My point is that *most* apps *don't* have that kind of requirement, so designers of those types of apps shouldn't get wrapped around the axle over evaluation of the relative speed of compilers and languages. In other words if Ada's critics were correct that "Ada is slow..." (it isn't) it would still be suitable for proabably 90% of the software development done in the world.
