First, I looked at DirectX/DirectSound (Yes, I'm on a Windows platform), but with too little documentation (or maybe I just didn't look the right place), I kind of gave up that idea. I didn't even know about libao until a week or so ago, when I looked through the xiph pages, and started reading about ogg123. ~egilhh
