Long Branch, NJ 07764 Message-ID: <3cpimi$fa4@monmouth.edu> NNTP-Posting-Host: moncol.monmouth.edu Keywords: Walnut Creek, Ada CDROM, CDROM Date: 1994-12-15T14:09:22+00:00 List-Id: Known Problems with the November 1994 Edition of the Walnut Creek Ada CDROM Richard Conn 7 December 1994 I am very pleased with Walnut Creek and its Ada CDROM product. Containing over 9,000 files (the entire PAL), it makes access to Ada-oriented information and code very convenient to a very large number of users at a very reasonable cost. I feel that Walnut Creek is providing an outstanding service to the Ada community by providing this product. While I helped to make this product happen, it is really Walnut Creek's product, and they put a lot of effort into it. Thanks! However, the November edition does have a few problems. This file contains a summary of them and describes ways to fix them or work around them. If you know of any additional problems, please let me know so I can add them to the list. For MSDOS users only (2 problems): ================================== 1. The files GO.BAT and SHOW.BAT at the top-level of the CDROM do not work. This table shows the existing version of these files and what they should be: GO.BAT: Current Version Should Read ====================================== ============================== REM CDROM Startup Batch File for MSDOS cd disc1\toolkit\msdos\cardcat\runme cd toolkit\msdos\cardcat\runme cardcat cardcat SHOW.BAT: Current Version Should Read ====================================== ============================== REM Batch file for running the PAL ... cd disc1\userdocs\palshow\runme cd userdocs\palshow\runme st cdshow.sh /nc st cdshow.sh /nc The PAL currently contains corrected versions of these files in its top-level directory. If you would like to create versions of these files to run from your hard disk, make the corrections and add a line at the front of your new BAT files that logs into the CDROM drive at the root directory. For example, if you CDROM drive is on drive D:, then an XGO.BAT file on your hard disk might read: REM CDROM Startup Batch File for MSDOS d: cd \ cd toolkit\msdos\cardcat\runme cardcat 2. The viewer cannot view the compiler\gnat\distrib directory correctly because the file name translation tables (TRANS.TBL) are not correct. A last-minute change was made to the structure of this directory tree, and the TRANS.TBL files were not all updated to reflect this change. Also, the PAL Catalog and PAL Card Catalog incorrectly show the directory display for this tree. The following is a directory display of the compiler\gnat\distrib directory. See the file TRANS.TBL in each directory to view the longer, more-explanatory file names and their mapping to these file names. g:/compiler/gnat/distrib/*.*: 13 Files, 8323850 Bytes r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:56:00 00_INDEX.TXT 126 d---- 5 Oct 1994 1:17:08 DOCS 2048 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:40 FEATURES 5842 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:40 GAS-1.38 338722 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:38 GCC-2.5 6463326 d---- 7 Oct 1994 7:56:00 GNAT-1.81 2048 d---- 7 Oct 1994 7:55:58 GNAT-1.83 4096 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:16 GNUPATCH.ZIP 86064 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:44 GZIP-1.2 1146880 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:58 README 12836 r--- 31 Dec 1980 16:02:16 TRANS.TBL 580 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:40 UNZ50X32.EXE 114367 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:26:14 UNZ511X.EXE 146915 g:/compiler/gnat/distrib/DOCS/*.*: 13 Files, 292687 Bytes r--- 5 Oct 1994 1:35:44 00_INDEX.TXT 156 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 GNAT-BOO 2209 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 GNAT-NEW 3620 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 GNAT-PAP.TEX 59037 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:00 GNAT-PRO 12071 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:04 GNAT-PRO.000 22870 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 GNATCHAT.1 12437 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:04 GNATCHAT.2 43468 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 GNATCHAT.3 22655 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 GNOTE1.DOC 57602 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 IEEE-BIN.ADS 54727 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:24:02 README 1222 r--- 31 Dec 1980 16:02:16 TRANS.TBL 613 g:/compiler/gnat/distrib/GNAT-1.81/*.*: 9 Files, 9929880 Bytes r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:56:00 00_INDEX.TXT 108 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:47:48 DOS-BIN-.000 1189059 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:47:48 DOS-BIN-.ZIP 716240 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:47:50 OS2-BIN-.000 1234013 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:47:48 OS2-BIN-.ZIP 1457150 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:47:50 SPARC-BI.TAR 2383779 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:47:50 SRC.TAR 1499417 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:47:50 SRC.ZIP 1449697 r--- 31 Dec 1980 16:02:16 TRANS.TBL 417 g:/compiler/gnat/distrib/GNAT-1.83/*.*: 16 Files, 25796556 Bytes r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:56:00 00_INDEX.TXT 282 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 ALPHA-DE.0-B 4027289 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 DOS-BIN-.000 1402292 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 DOS-BIN-.001 1431218 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 DOS-BIN-.ZIP 1451770 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 LINUX-BI.000 1098502 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 LINUX-BI.TAR 1029993 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 LINUX.LSM 951 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:18 MIPS-DEC.4-B 3090246 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:20 OS2-BIN-.000 1297393 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:20 OS2-BIN-.ZIP 1457334 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:20 RS6000-I.2-B 3711118 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:20 SPARC-SU.1-B 2557816 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:20 SRC.TAR 1642761 r--- 7 Oct 1994 7:49:20 SRC.ZIP 1596741 r--- 31 Dec 1980 16:02:16 TRANS.TBL 850 End g:/compiler/gnat/distrib/*.* 51 Files, 44342973 Bytes For all users (2 problems): ========================== 3. Symbolic links are not supported by all operating systems, so most drivers (particularly MSDOS and any vanilla ISO-9660 driver) for the CDROM do not pick up the symbolic links, showing them instead as empty files. The only, but highly visible, problem like this known at this time is the access to the Ada9X Reference Manuals in the AJPO tree. The directory in question currently looks like this: 9 Files, 38477 Bytes r--- 5 Oct 1994 1:35:16 00_INDEX.TXT 51 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:16:10 ADA9X.TXT 8072 d---- 5 Oct 1994 1:35:10 MRTCOMME 18432 d---- 5 Oct 1994 1:35:14 NEWS 4096 d---- 5 Oct 1994 1:35:14 PAST 4096 r--- 4 Oct 1994 20:16:10 README 1303 d---- 5 Oct 1994 1:14:56 REPORTS 2048 r--- 5 Oct 1994 1:35:14 RM9X 0 r--- 31 Dec 1980 16:02:16 TRANS.TBL 379 Note the zero-length file RM9X ... this was a symbolic link to mrtcomments/rm9x. With the last-minute change in the GNAT directory tree, both the PAL Catalog and the interactive PAL Card Catalog contain displays of the old directory structure for the GNAT tree (not the new). Users should realize that the directory listing for the GNAT tree is incorrect in the documentation.
