Agreed. There is no particular need for any element to be "hot swapable." With Multics, the units that could be added or dropped were large cabinets, call it six feet by three by three or so. The point was that the Multics site had an electronic existance that was not tied to any particular hardware. You could, and many sites did, upgrade the hardware, replacing all of it without ever shutting the site down. -- Robert I.
