You constantly have a need for support in terms of new features, add-on capabilities, changing requirements, customization, etc. (Although Quicken seems to do well without providing custom software, eh?) I don't think it would take 10 years to catch on. It may take 10 years to mature as a volunteer effort, but if done with an eye towards commercialization, I doubt it would be that long.
