I just never said anywhere in this train of thought that Microsoft got there by making a good quality product. What I said was that they didn't get there by "Monopoly" - but by being successful businessmen. McDonalds makes something that only vaguely resembles food, yet they are very successful because their pseudo-food is served up really fast and cheap. (Remember the "Good", "Fast", "Cheap" algorithm?) Microsoft has done similar - they provided "Cheap" at a time when the market was aching for some sort of inexpensive OS. (The "High Quiality" ones were just way out of reach for the average consumer. Could you have afforded a VAX/VMS platform when those were all the rage?)
