The fact that people voluntarily release valuable stuff into the world and allow others to then make a profit from it without recompense is clear. People do that. Nobody forced them to. Its their right to be foolish if they like. Personally, I don't think it is basic justice that someone should get their R&D work done by someone else and not pay something to the laborer, but if the laborer is a willing slave, that's his business. As for me, I'll offer my software development talents to those willing to give me a paycheck or otherwise compensate me in a manner I find acceptable. Freedom is the freedom to be a fool if you like. I certainly won't stop someone from putting out code under the GPL. Sometimes its to their advantage since it can build market share and still have reasonable protection from competitors.
