Several hundred people who thought their lives were not at stake discovered otherwise. No one had looked for a worst case scenario until it happened. The Ariane 501 disintegrating at 4000 meters altitude (about 2 1/2 miles) was never imagined. Fortunately most of the larger chunks of debris were carried upward before falling to the ground so there were no serious injuries. But I would not have liked to have been one of the many technicians watching the launch from a couple of kilometers distant suddenly realizing that the Ariane 501 wreckage was planning to land where I was standing.
