"Fermat's Last Theorem: The Story of a Riddle That Confounded the World's Greatest Minds for 358 Years" by Simon Singh (Hardcover) Be careful, it is out of print, and Barnes & Noble lists several similar books by Singh, that may or may not be as good, including a recent paperback "Fermat's Last Theorem" and "Fermat's Enigma: The Epic Quest to Solve the World's Greatest Mathematical Problem" by Simon Singh. The first may be a cut down versions of the 1998 book, I don't know. The second is more or less the script for the Nova episode "The Proof" which Singh put together. Singh does a very good job of laying a trail of breadcrumbs that anyone should be able to follow. But he also has lots of side trails and offhand remarks where you need your mountain climbing gear if you try to follow them.
