You have to accept the simple fact that sometimes, force is the only alternative against evil. And the UN isn't a viable option in most cases either - non of the peace keeping operations they have run have made things better. At best, they delay further bloodshed into the future (Balkans missions) - at worst, they achieve nothing at all or make things worse (middle east) The best way to ensure peace is to have the best preparedness for war - so that no one dares bother you. Follow that with a simple maxim to stay out of the affairs of others (which the US frequently does do), and you don't have many problems.
