There _is_ a lag time, but it's not really any different than the original example of American-made automobiles. After all, it's not at all obvious that a car will rust out in 4-5 years after only a few months on the market -- but it will take years for that manufacturer to rebuild its reputation once it's lost and it will lose a lot of sales during that time period.
