Most OS's and web servers can withstand a fatal error that causes a restart or reboot and not much is at stake. Obviously, money could be lost by eBay if they are down for any substantial time, but it just doesn't seem to me to be the same thing as a plane falling out of the sky because a flight control did a divide-by-zero.
