The reason we're doing it this way is to force the students to do some work before the assignment deadline (after previous painful instances where people have apparently opened a textbook for the first time the night before -- ultimately their own problem, but painful nevertheless) but without the avalanche of marking that this would cause. The bulk of the marks are still awarded on the basis of a manually-assessed submission at the end of the course. It's not perfect, but dealing with groups of up to 200 never is.
