    I'm a pack rat, but not quite that much of a pack rat.  When RPI was
upgrading from an IBM 360/50, the committee looked at several
alternatives.  IBM was almost ruled out until we got to run some
benchmarks on the prototype 3033.  We then ordered one on the first day
orders were accepted and then traded with someone whose building wasn't
ready to get a very low serial number machine.  (Our new building wasn't
ready either, but there was room to shoehorn it in with the 360/50.)

    In any case, there were several microcode extensions which, when
used, dramatically sped up some of our key benchmarks.

    Anyone from IBM--or a bigger packrat than I am--who can find a
twenty year old price list?
