The 'For Dummies' probably works because it makes people feel comfortable with the book, believing that it won't contain material so turgid or murky that only a rocket scientist could figure it out. I suppose that everyone has to start out learning programming somewhere, but I'd agree that it would be better if people approached it with the attitude that it is something which requires good mental capabilities and hard work. It shouldn't be viewed as something that anyone can do with a week's worth of training.
