The guidance system was designed to process data from two radar sources, one of which (the rate system) failed, revealing the instability of the software error in the processing of the other (track) system. I strongly suspect that the error was first order in its effects, (i.e, the rate data was the most direct measure of motional stability and the system relied exclusively on that data for this part of its analysis while the rate system was operating), but the desciption isn't detailed enough to be certain -- William B.
