It's simple and easy, and people can be programming in minutes. One would soon outgrow it, as it isn't a very powerful environment, but the concepts are still there. It's a completely dynamic environment, where you can modify code and instantly see the results of a change. Yet another important feature of a learning environment. If you can't tinker quickly, and have to wade though a lengthy compile and dozens of compiler switches, a newbie would be lost in no-time.
