Well, since you mentioned Pascal, are you familiar with the issue of conformant array parameters? The fact that all labels are integers? (One of the worst features of Algol 60 was that it *allowed* integer labels, but at least it didn't require them.) The hash it made of bit strings, due to confusing "sets" with "sets of small integers"? The I/O model? IMHO the quotes around "guru" were earned.
