Good point.  Here are a couple (not too good, complete or
elaborate) definitions:

1)  Molecular vibrations of a particular type.  (Typically in air.)
Implication:  Tree does make a sound.

2)  A human experience which all humans (who are
    not deaf) know about.

Implication:  Tree does not make a sound.
