I have received about 10 EMAIL replies to my posting that stated that I'd consider sending copies to people if the number of requests were not large. 10 is (in this case) a large number. I called John Herro to see if it would be appropriate to post his address and telephone number on the net. He was no net access where he works. Software Innovations Technology 1083 Mandarin Drive NE Palm Bay, FL 32905-4706 (407) 951-0233 $10 fee for a 5.25" diskette $25 for registration (tech support, etc.) Dr. Herro's tutorial is shareware and is available on many shareware distributions and on many BBS's. It's shareware with a twist: if a registered owner passes it to a person who becomes registered, the original owner gets a cut of the registration fee. Therefore, since this is a public access network, I'm not going to send any copies to be registered: that would give me a cut - which would be nice but somewhat unethical. However, as promissed, I will mail the tutorial to the original poster. The tutorial is in a single executable that UNzipps, squences, squeezes, sneezes, etc. to about 700K of files on a hard drive. The tutorial driver is written in Ada, and the input-output is somewhat machine-dependent. Dr. Herro has included several machine-specific IO packages. It runs extremely well on a PC (executable for PC is included) and on a VAX/VMS (you'd have to compile his source to get it running). The files includ the source of the tutorial, a HUGE data file, many examples, registration information, a printable tutorial, etc. The tutorial is a lengthly view of the language covering every basic topic. It is extremely well written. The basis of the tutorial is the data file of screens that is accessed via DIRECT_IO. A user many stop (or start) anywhere in the lessons; a small data file is written to mark the location of the latest screen. We have had much success with this software both on the VAX's and on PC's. It can be customized for a particular location by Herro's commercial Customization program. We are working on some extensions to the tutorial to suit our needs - expecially since most of our Ada students use VAX Ada.
