For a PLC, real-time control is not such a big problem as communication with the outer world while keeping real-time. We have a middleware written in Ada for dealing with various hardware under real-time constraints, e.g. EtherCAT, CAN, XCP, iTOT, GPIO etc. Application is mostly in automotive and energy.
