In an article in the European Jouranl of Engineering Education (Vol 13, 3, 1988 p. 307ff) Billy V. Koen defines the engineering method as "The use of engineering heuristics to cause the best change in a poorly understood situation within the available resources". He goes on to describe the kinds of heuristics; "simple rules of thumb" "factors of safety" "Heuristics that engineers use to keep risk within acceptable bounds"..... In a project I am working on I am trying to capture some of the heuristics used by software developers. If you can think of any that you personally use could you please e-mail them to me... I will summarize if you like. Thanks, Pam Lawhead The University of Mississippi lawhead@sam.cs.olemiss.edu
